The Meaning of Life

The Meaning of Life

The wise King Solomon begins the book of Ecclesiastes with these words, “Meaningless! Meaningless! says the Teacher. Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless” (Ecc.1:2 NIV). From here, Solomon sets out to research the meaning of life. Miles Munroe says, “The greatest tragedy in all of life is to live and don’t know why.”

But is Solomon right that everything is meaningless? If that is true, then nothing would have purpose. Solomon himself said, “there is a time and a season for everything” (3:1). To me that is the purpose, and purpose is meaning.

But if life for you is just toiling to accumulate more stuff, you will find it meaningless, because you would lack a compelling “why” for living. Some people spend 35, 40 years on the same job, and what do they have to show for it? Some get a gold-plated watch, some a pension but they can hardly make two ends meet.

Solomon tried to find the answer to the “whys” of life. But isn’t it strange that Solomon is saying, everything is meaningless, and he is rich, sits on a throne of pure gold, and has 300 wives and 700 concubines. Wouldn’t you consider that a little strange? Perhaps not, you could have everything material and still have an aching void in your heart.

Perhaps, he does not mean everything is meaningless as a conclusion reached, but as an assumption to be investigated. If you do the investigation, make sure you do not spend all your life investigating. Some people end up at the other side of the forest empty handed.

Or, perhaps Solomon is saying, life without God at its center is meaningless. Now, that makes sense. Frankly, that is the conclusion reached after his full investigation of life.

He said it, “Let us hear  conclusion of the whole matter, fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man, for God will bring every work into judgment with every secret thing, whether it be good or evil” (12:13-14 KJV). We are accountable to God at the end of life.

Solomon also made a recommendation not to waste your life, but to “remember now your Creator in the days of your youth.” Why? Because the older you get the more difficult it will be to gain interest in things spiritual (12:1-2).

I have a recommendation of my own to help clarify the meaning of life. It is volume 8 in my 10 volume series. Title: RESURRECTION OF HUMANS: Guaranteed Life after Life.
